There are also "DUMB" non-intelligent or 3rd-party interfaces. The above are known as INTELLIGENT interfaces.
However, even when VCDS-Lite is fully licensed and activated and used with these 3rd-party "Dumb" interfaces, there is NO support for the CAN-bus (most (almost all) cars post 2008!). If you want to unlock the full advanced functionality then you have to register and activate this software. This means you can download the software and use a portion of its functionality. Both the old VAG-COM 409 and VCDS-Lite are what is known as Shareware software. These however ONLY work with either VAG-COM 409 (released in 2004) or the newer VCDS-Lite ( VCDS-Lite is quite different from the FULL VCDS version for intelligent interfaces). There are several schematics for these on the web and even more cheap ebay or Chinese versions of them.
The above are know as INTELLIGENT interfaces. The importance of this fact will become apparent further down. In other words, the HEX interface also acts as a security dongle that controls access to the VCDS (VAG-COM) software.
It should be stated that any version of the VCDS (VAG-COM) software higher than VAG-COM 409 (released in September 2004, hence "4", "09"), will not function if it does not detect an intelligent interface WITH A VALID LICENSE on the interface. This allows you to run the VCDS software on any PC and when the software detects the valid license file, it will unlock the VCDS (VAG-COM) software so it can be used. As some of you know, the VCDS (VAG-COM) software license is contained within the memory of the HEX interface. Within the microprocessor are over eight thousand lines of code, that do anything from protocol conversion, updates, controlling K-line and CAN-bus data flow as well as advanced authentication and licensing. It has a USB chip on the one side, to connect to the PC, then K-line and CAN-bus drivers on the other side, to connect to the vehicle diagnostic busses, and a microprocessor in the middle - so to speak, with some other required circuitry. These "cables" are what we refer to as an Intelligent cable. We started developing the "+CAN" versions in 2004. Now let's look at this "HEX-USB+CAN cable" in a little more detail. The most popular of these is the HEX-USB+CAN interface. That is why their top of the line cables are referred to as the "HEX+CAN Series".
